How to Plan a Timeless Wedding Portrait Timeline

A simple guide to building a portrait schedule that keeps your day calm, unhurried, and beautifully documented from first light to final dance.

One of the most common things we hear from couples after their wedding is 'I wish we had more time for photos.' The good news: you can — and it starts with a thoughtful portrait timeline built into your wedding day schedule, not bolted on at the end.

Start With the Light, Not the Clock

Before you slot in portrait time, ask your photographer what the light looks like at your venue at different hours. In Southern California, the golden hour — the 45–60 minutes before sunset — is almost always the most flattering. If your ceremony ends at 5pm and sunset is at 7pm, you have a window. Plan around it.

If your venue has a specific look you want to capture — a courtyard, a vineyard row, a hillside view — ask about the best time of day for that specific spot. At Vida Visual, we scout every venue before the wedding day so we're never guessing.

The Ideal Portrait Timeline

Here's a structure that works consistently for weddings across Riverside and the Inland Empire:

  • Getting ready coverage: 60–90 minutes before the ceremony
  • First look (if chosen): 20–30 minutes before the ceremony
  • Wedding party portraits: 30–45 minutes after the ceremony
  • Family formals: 20–30 minutes (keep the list tight)
  • Couple portraits: 20–30 minutes during cocktail hour
  • Golden hour portraits: 10–15 minutes just before sunset

Keep the Family Formal List Short

Family formals are important — and they can quietly consume an hour of your day if the list grows unchecked. We recommend limiting formal groupings to immediate family (parents, siblings, grandparents) and letting candid photography handle the rest. Send the list to your photographer in advance so we can call names efficiently and keep things moving.

Protect the Couple Portrait Time

If there's one block of time couples consistently wish they had more of, it's the private couple portrait session. This is your chance to breathe, connect, and let us create the images you'll frame on your wall. Even 20 minutes, done well, produces stunning results. Guard this time like you'd guard your vows.
