The Complete Guide to Maternity Sessions in Southern California
When to schedule, what to wear, where to shoot, and how to feel completely comfortable in front of the camera — everything you need for a beautiful maternity portrait session.

There's a narrow, beautiful window in every pregnancy when you feel present enough to be photographed — and visible enough for the images to be striking. Finding that window is the first step to a maternity session you'll love for decades.
When to Schedule Your Maternity Session
The sweet spot is 28 to 34 weeks. By this point, the bump is fully rounded and beautifully visible, but you still have the energy and mobility for an outdoor or studio session. Earlier, and the belly may not show prominently. Later, and fatigue and discomfort can make the experience harder than it should be.
Book your session date around week 20–22, and schedule the shoot itself for weeks 30–32. This gives you buffer in both directions if your little one has other plans.
Outdoor or Studio — How to Choose
Southern California is one of the best places in the world for outdoor maternity photography. Golden hour light on a hillside, flowing fabrics catching the breeze, the warmth and natural softness of the outdoors — it's hard to beat. Our outdoor sessions in Riverside, Jurupa Hills, and the surrounding foothills produce some of our most requested images.
Studio sessions, on the other hand, offer control. Weather isn't a factor. The lighting is intentional. And our studio wardrobe collection — flowing gowns, draped fabrics, form-fitting styles — gives you options you may not have at home.
The best choice? Often both. We regularly combine 30 minutes in studio followed by a golden hour outdoor shoot. You get the best of each environment in one session.
What to Wear
- Flowy gowns in neutral tones — ivory, blush, sage, champagne
- Form-fitting dresses that celebrate the bump without hiding it
- Fabric wraps and drapes for a timeless, artistic look
- Solid colors over patterns — the bump is the focal point
- Comfortable shoes you can actually walk in — or go barefoot
If you're unsure, borrow from our studio wardrobe collection. We have gowns in a wide range of sizes and styles — available at no extra charge for all maternity clients.
Who to Include
Partners, older children, even a beloved pet — maternity sessions work beautifully as a family portrait too. We recommend starting the session as a family and then carving out 15–20 minutes for solo portraits of mom. Both sets of images serve different purposes and both are worth having.
