Planning Your Elopement Timeline Around the Light

Lighting is the single most important variable in outdoor photography. For elopements, we strongly recommend centering your ceremony around golden hour — the 60–90 minutes before sunset. This is when Southern California's light is warmest, most directional, and most forgiving.

In practical terms: if sunset is at 7:45 p.m., we'd suggest arriving at your location around 5:30 p.m. That gives us 45 minutes in open shade for detail and portrait work, then the full golden-hour window for ceremony and editorial portraits, and a soft blue-light period just after sunset that can produce some of the most atmospheric images of the day.

Permits and Logistics: What Couples Often Miss

Some Southern California locations require permits for photography and ceremony use. National Forest land, certain state parks, and private property all have different rules. We guide every couple through the logistics for their chosen location — what's required, how to file, how far in advance — so you're not discovering a problem the week before your elopement.

The legal side is also worth addressing: a civil ceremony with a county commissioner is efficient and can be done in advance of your elopement date. Many couples sign the legal paperwork at the county office, then have their personal ceremony outdoors with us present. Others bring a friend ordained online.
