Small Wedding Venues in Southern California

A small wedding is not a scaled-down big one — it is a different day, and most venues are not built for it. Where 20 to 50 guests actually works in Southern California.

Most wedding venues are priced and built for 150 people. Bring 30 and you pay for a room you cannot fill, and the day feels thin in a space that size. The couples who get this right pick venues designed for the number they actually have.

Courthouse plus dinner

The most underrated small wedding in Southern California: a civil ceremony at a historic courthouse, then a long dinner somewhere good. The Riverside County Historic Courthouse, San Bernardino and Santa Barbara are all beautiful buildings, and Santa Barbara in particular is one of the most photographed courthouses in the state. The whole thing costs a fraction of a venue wedding and the photographs do not look cheaper.

Restaurant buyouts

A private room or a full buyout at a restaurant you already love solves catering, bar, staff and ambience in one contract. For 20 to 40 people it is frequently cheaper than a venue plus a caterer, and the room already looks like something. Ask about the buyout minimum rather than a per-head rate — that is the number that decides it.

The photography caveat: restaurant interiors are usually dim and warm-lit, sometimes with colored fixtures. That is workable and can look wonderful, but it is a different look from an open outdoor ceremony. Do your portraits outside before you go in.

The coast

Beaches and bluffs from Laguna up through Santa Barbara are the classic small-wedding setting, and for good reason — the backdrop is free and the light at the end of the day is the best you will find anywhere in the state. Two practical things: most beaches require a permit for a ceremony with chairs or an arch, and it will be windy. Plan hair and a sound plan accordingly.

Private estates and Airbnb weddings

A rented house with a view, for a weekend, with your closest people in it — this is the fastest-growing version of the small wedding and often the most personal. Check the listing's event policy before you book, not after; plenty of hosts prohibit events outright, and the ones that allow them usually cap the guest count and charge an event fee.

How coverage works for a small wedding

A small wedding rarely needs ten hours. Ours run four to six — enough for preparations, the ceremony, portraits in the good light, and dinner — and start at $1,440 for up to 20 guests. There is a full breakdown of what is included, and a guide to planning the day if you are starting from scratch.
